Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in utilizing video review systems.
Video review technology are set to arrive at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.
Competitors will gain the option to contest certain rulings made by the official, mirroring the protocol already in use at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.
This technology will be operational on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles matches.
This development arrives only a year after the All England Club implemented ELC, which terminated the centuries-old tradition of line judges.
Scope of Challenges
Players cannot to challenge the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the official to re-examine other situations, including:
- If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
- If a shot touched an rival's racket or body during play.
- Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a point.
Notably, there will be no limit on the number of challenges a competitor can ask for.
Case in Point
An illustrative case occurred in Indian Wells recently, where a top player used the review system against Jack Draper.
The British player conceded it was a difficult call for the official, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."
The umpire viewed a replay and ruled the player was guilty of hindrance, awarding the point to his opponent.
Growing Trend
Video reviews aren't new for Grand Slams. It was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.
Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews implemented at all of its events.
Other Changes
A further change at Wimbledon this year involves the introduction of visual indicators on displays to support the audio calls from the ELC system.
This addresses situations where the crowd have occasionally been unsure whether a ball was in or out.
Finally, with precisely 100 days remaining until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have also revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
